OUR MUSIC PROGRAM CULTIVATES STUDENTS' GOD-GIVEN TALENTS

HCA offers music programs designed to give students an opportunity to discover and develop their talents. Students are encouraged to express their Christian faith through their giftings. To do so, they are presented with a variety of venues by teachers who are talented and proficient in their fields. Whatever the venue, the goal is always to glorify our Creator.

We develop the musical skills of our students in preschool through twelveth grade and provide opportunities to use those skills in chapels, concerts and special events, with the hope that this talent will be used throughout their lives in service to God.

Lower School Music

Middle and High School Music

Middle School students take music one semester per year, during which they explore the fundamentals of music theory and history, basic vocal technique, and handbell ringing. Middle School students perform at both the Christmas and Spring Concerts. Students who are eager to pursue music at a higher level may join the Middle School Chorus, which meets twice weekly during the lunch period. These students dig deeper into good vocal technique and choral singing. They may also have the opportunity to compete in a regional choral competition.

HCA offers a variety of music courses for high school students. Freshmen and sophomores can take Music and Culture, which explores music in our lives, in the media, and around the world. They may also take Introduction to Theatre, a discovery course about the production and performance aspects of live theatre. Juniors and seniors are eligible to take both Music History, in which they experience music from the Middle Ages through the 21st Century, and Music Theory, learning the mechanics of music, as 5-credit major courses. Another offering for 11th and 12th grade students is an elective Voice Class for those who wish to learn a healthy vocal technique in a small class setting.

HANDBELLS

HCA has two award-winning high school handbell choirs: Prelude and Allegro. The choirs perform in concert and as guests in community events and outreaches.

Instrumental Program

Our instrumental program for students in the fourth through eighth grades offers instrumental lessons on brass, woodwinds, and percussion.

worship teams

Our middle school and high school worship teams lead in a time of praise and worship in HCA’s weekly chapel.

Chorale

HCA’s award-winning Chorale is open to students in grades 9-12. The Chorale performs in two concerts per year (Christmas and spring), as well as in an occasional ministry concert in the community.

Servants of the King

Servants of the King is an audition-only vocal ensemble open to students in grades 9-12. This choir performs fifteen to twenty ministry concerts per year and often serves as the face of HCA to the community.

High School Music Courses

HCA offers a variety of music courses. Another offering for 11th and 12th grade students is an elective Voice Class for those who wish to learn a healthy vocal technique in a small-class setting.

theatre

High school students present an annual Dessert Theatre in the spring. Both nights of this popular performance are typically sold out. This highlight event of the school year involves students and parents in script writing, stage production, costuming, make-up, set design, and staging.

Composition And Recording Class & HCA Studios

Our Comp and Recording Class is a unique gem. During the first part of the course, students are taught how to formulate and structure songs, collaborate their ideas, create lyrics, and experiment with different instruments. The second part of the course encompasses learning about different types of recording equipment and how to use each component while recording their compositions. The class meets in our rehearsal room, which includes a studio that is perfectly conducive to song creation.

Our studio is home to a complete digital recording studio with professional grade equipment. Our main studio contains an iMac, Tascam DAW, KRK V8 speakers, Roland RS5 keyboard, Casio Privia Keyboard, Pro AKG headphones, Shure 32 Condenser microphone, Sennheiser Dynamic Mics, acoustical foam-lined studio, and enough professional recording software (Logic 9/X) to make the process run incredibly smoothly. During the recording process, students learn how to mix and master their tracks using the digital software.

Our rehearsal room has two additional Apple recording stations, three acoustic guitars, electric guitars, basses, two keyboards, a Roland electric drum set, full PA sound system, LED lights, and two professional deejay units for those interested in learning how to deejay. This room is also where the worship teams practice and instrumental lessons are given.

Opportunities Beyond HCA

Those involved in Chorale and Servants of the King are encouraged to pursue music in outside venues. Our students have been accepted into the NJ All-State Chorus, the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College Program, and the Boston Conservatory Summer Program.

Music Booster Fellowship

The Music Booster Club supports HCA’s dynamic music program by organizing volunteers, supporting performances, and raising funds for competition and ministry trips.
